How to Felt a Shed Roof in Blackpool: A Step-by-Step Guide
Felt roofing is a popular choice for shed roofs in Blackpool due to its durability, water resistance, and affordability. If you're looking to felt a shed roof, this guide will walk you through the process. Please note that it's recommended to hire a professional roofer if you're not experienced in roofing work.
Materials Needed:
- Felt roofing material (available in various thicknesses, typically 3-4 mm or 1/8 inch)
- Roofing nails
- Timber decking (if the old decking needs to be replaced)
- Glass fibre reinforced felt (optional)
- Ridge cap (optional)
Preparation:
Before starting the job, make sure to:
- Inspect the shed roof for any damage or rotting timber. Replace any damaged timber to provide a solid base for the felt roofing.
- Clear the roof of any debris, old felt, or nails.
- Check the shed's gable ends to ensure they are secure and won't compromise the new felt roof.
Step 1: Lay the Underlay
- Roll out the underlay material (usually a thin, breathable membrane) across the roof deck, ensuring it covers the entire surface.
- Use nails to secure the underlay to the timber decking, spacing them about 150 mm (6 inches) apart.
Step 2: Apply the Felt Roofing
- Cut the felt roofing material to size, leaving a 50 mm (2 inch) overhang around the edges.
- Apply the felt roofing material to the roof, starting from the bottom edge and working your way up. Use nails to secure the felt to the timber decking, spacing them about 150 mm (6 inches) apart.
- Ensure the felt is smooth and flat, with no wrinkles or creases.
Step 3: Add Additional Layers (Optional)
- If desired, apply an additional layer of glass fibre reinforced felt to provide extra durability and water resistance.
- Use the same nailing pattern as before to secure the additional layer.
Step 4: Finish the Ridge
- Cut a ridge cap to size and apply it to the top of the roof, ensuring it covers the entire ridge.
- Use nails to secure the ridge cap to the timber decking.
Step 5: Final Inspection
- Inspect the roof to ensure the felt is smooth, flat, and securely attached to the timber decking.
- Check for any gaps or wrinkles in the felt, and make any necessary repairs.
